Welcome to Margaret’s Place

Places carry the spirit of the people who shaped them.

This place begins with Margaret—a World War II veteran who came to this stretch of Vancouver Island after the war. Long before the word "retreat" entered the wellness lexicon, she was living quietly on this land, tending it with the kind of self-sufficient care that only someone who has seen the world at its worst can bring to something they want to keep beautiful. She stayed for decades. The land had her back.

It was architect Craig Roland who first found his way into Margaret's orbit—drawn to the land, to her story, and to the quiet potential of the place. As the years passed and Margaret's ability to care for the property on her own began to wane, it was Craig who stepped in, becoming its steward and protector. He saw what it could become without ever wanting to erase what it already was.

In time, Craig brought in neighbours Mark and Val. A couple with deep Canadian roots and a special love of place. Val has spent decades at the intersection of transformative leadership. And Mark caring for national infrastructure through his work CP Rail. They understood instinctively what this land was for. Together with Craig, whose architectural vision gave Margaret’s Place its signature West Coast modern aesthetic—clean lines, natural materials, structures that frame the landscape rather than compete with it, they brought the property to its fullest expression.

We are now stewards of the vision they created and hope to share it with you.
